Day 2 - History Curriculum

Good Evening to my fellow Australian friends and good morning to my round the world friends welcome to the Schoolhouse Review Crew 5 days of ... blog hop.

The theme for my 5 days is Curriculum Choices. My aim is not to list every single resource out there (That in itself would be almost impossible as the Internet is an ever changing place). My aim is to give you some ideas to start you off.

Today's theme is History.
My personal passion is teaching/learning history chronologically. My reason for this is that dates help us to anchor our learning. I loved the stories of history from school and loved even more seeing the cause and effect of history but hated memorizing dates. My love affair with history grew when I started home educating.

FREE History Resources for Homeschool

Last year I shared with you my Homeschool for FREE list and then updated it in January this year.  I have been feeling a little frustrated with it's length and it's been difficult to find the information I want in it so this week I will be sharing shorter lists divided into subject areas.

    My Passion: Chronological History

    Teaching history chronologically has become one of my favorite things to do.  When I was at school I loved history because of all the wonderful people I got to meet as I travelled through time. Their acts of bravery and heroism were inspirational. The villains being conquered were always met with applause in my heart.  The only problem was I could never connect the dots because every year we did isolated historical time periods and for some things I could not even begin to comprehend the cause and effect of these actions in time as we never continued to find out what happened.

    Time lines and teaching history chronologically walk hand in hand. Dates help us to anchor our learning as we mark them off on a time line. I took this a step further and actually added our family to our time line.  This enhanced our families experience of history.  I remember so clearly when we first started using time lines we had been putting people and events onto our time line for around three months.  We happened to read a biography of Eric Liddell and discovered that he was still alive when Paul's parents were born. My son looked at me with wonder in his eyes and exclaimed: "So Mommy these are R*E*A*L people!" That ah ha moment had occurred.  He connected the dots and realized that he was a part of history.

    The second thing I have come to understand during my home school journey is that EVERY THING happens somewhere in history. As Diana Waring would say "It's OK to take the Scenic Route when teaching history" It does not matter what subject you pick there is a point in time that it happened. By using a timeline we are able to add in all manner of learning.

    I think that too often we see history as an isolated topic and that was a mistake I made for a long time.  I have found that the adventure of teaching history has become a rich tapestry of His hand working to bring us to Himself.  There is so much to learn from past errors to past triumphs. For me dates and history are confusing outside of the time line frame work. Personally I am not very good at remembering them. However the relationships in history are more my personal pleasure. I am not saying that there is no point in learning dates, what I am saying is that this is something you need to decide for yourself and act on it. For me it's the people, the relationships and the cause and effect and it's this that attracts me to learning history chronologically.

    When I first started on this journey there were extremely limited resources available and most of us muddled along adding bits and pieces in as we came across them.  Today however there is a plethora of chronological points of view and methodology. Here is a list of a few to whet your appetite for what is out there.

    Teaching History Revisited

    Teaching history is not solely about the subject of history or a set of isolated events found important by some textbook author. For me personally  learning history chronologically is at the very heart of all our learning. To aid our historical studies we made our own Book of Time. Dates help us to anchor our learning as we mark them off on a time line.

    To aid this assimilation of history and to make it more real for my children I have added in family to our book of time including important dates (marriage, immigration and the births of nieces and nephews).

    When I started home educating I only had the experience of history via a textbook. I am grateful to Sonlight who introduced me to studying history in the context of excellent literature. I agree with this statement by Jimmie Lanely
     "But living history books — even historical fiction — capture the imagination while informing the mind. The reader soaks in the the facts of history in a natural and enjoyable way that forms a much stronger base of understanding than rote memorization."

    For Us
    Sir N is eight this year and we are concentrating on exploring the world around us.  We are working our way through Sonlight's Core curriculums until he is 12 when we will be adding in Mystery of History for the high school years. I am also adding in missionary biographies.  We are currently reading Seed Sowers and a YWAM biography Jim Elliot: One Great Purpose.

    Charlotte Mason said, “The fatal mistake is in the notion that [the child] must learn ‘outlines’ of the whole history… just as he must cover the geography of all the world. Let him, on the contrary, linger pleasantly over the history of a single man, a short period, until he thinks the thoughts of that man, is at home in the ways of that period. Though he is reading and thinking of the lifetime of a single man, he is really getting intimately acquainted with the history of a whole nation for a whole age.” Home Education, Vol. 1 Part XVIII.–History, p.280 

    Although I have a liking of Charlotte Mason philosophy I am in no way a purist in my approach. I am more an eclectic home schooler in my history studies approach. I have been influenced in my approach by Charlotte Mason, Sonlight and The Well Trained Mind.

    Over the years I have come to realize that history is more than what has been dictated upon us by textbooks at school. It is a rich tapestry of life.  Every single thing that happens every single day is a historical fact. Science, Math, Geography it's all a form of history as every single aspect of every single subject has taken place at some point in time and by adding these points to a time line we grow in our understanding of the world we live in.

    There are currently three diferent history streams. We chose to work our way through Ancient History Adventures. There are twelve episodes in this adventure
    1. The Rise of Western Civilization -  "I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of Marble." - Augustus
    2. The Age of conflict -  "Hope is the pillar that holds up the world. Hope is the dream of a waking man." - Pliny the Elder
    3. A Time of Challenges -  "Rome has grown since its humble beginnings that it is now overwhelmed by its own greatness - Titus Livius.
    4. Roots of Democracy
    5. Challenges of a New Religion
    6. The Spread of Christianity
    7. East Meets West
    8. Ruins and Romans
    9. The Advancement of Knowledge
    10. Heart of Stone
    11. Constantine and Constantinople
    12. The Best of the Ancient World.

    Within the tour we are covering Greece, Rome and Asia Minor.  The process each week is simple.  You start with watching the weeks video.  These average at around 45 minutes each. We split the watching some weeks as the content was so full of history we needed some time to absorbe what we had learned.



    Upon completing the video you then have the option of using the expanded curriculum options.  These are readings from primary source documents by authors such as:  Virgil, Homer, Plato, Cicero, Pliney the younger and the Bible. Each week the readings are supplied and you have the option of using the online reader, downloading it and printing it or reading in a pdf.

    Dave's goal is to take us on a journey through locations from Ancient History  in order to gain a new perspective on the Ancient Empires and their contextual role in the rise of Christianity and Western Civilization.

    Each and every post has beautiful photographs of historical artifacts of interest as well as a beautiful painting referencing the learning.

    The side roads are interesting too.  Little tidbits of history.  For example in week 1we read a little bit about the Roman politician and general Mark Antony who served under the leadership of Julius Caesar.



    For the Parent
    • The curriculum has been writen for ages 12 and up.
    • High School students have the opportunity to dig deeper via original source documents, expert papers and short articles which are provided.
    • Old students are provided with research essay questions via outside research.
    • Younger students (ages 5 to 11) are encouraged to watch the video's and narrate answers to the basic questions.
    • The curriculum covers history geography, classic art, archaeology and apologetics.

    History, Geography Science for 2015

    Our topic of the week is Exploring Our World: Social Studies and more Science---includes history, geography, world cultures, worldview, biology, botany, geology, etc., etc., etc.

    In last weeks post I shared our Science plans for 2015 so this week I shall share about History and Geography.

    This year we will continue reading Story of The World Volume One and using the Activity Guide which goes alongside it.

    I will  also be consulting Home's Cool and choosing books from the Sonlight curriculum to read out loud from this list Sonlight Books arranged by the well trained mind 4 year cycles

    Geography
    We will continue with incidental geography.  This will happen during our history lessons.  As we read about historical happenings I shall point to the areas on the map to encourage familiarity.

    I haven't decided yet upon a resource to use.  Here are a few I'm contemplating using
     I think we may continue using Expedition Earth: A Journey through God's World.

    I would like to also complete  Trail Guide to World Geography  This particular package is my all time favourite.

    I saw a review on Wonder Maps and really like the look of this program.  Have any of you used it or seen it ?

    70+ Resources for Valentines Day 2014

    It's coming up to Valentine's Day soon.  I've just spent a little time online searching for some more resources to add to my list from last year.

    Love is a verb and as such needs action.  I use Valentine's day to remember to tell those I love that I do. A couple of years ago (okay it's more than a couple more like a decade ...) I read the book The 5 Love Languages. This is one of those must read books on my list.  If you have not heard about love languages or how they impact you on a daily basis then please please buy the book and have a read.  I'm pleased to say they have a dedicated website now with loads of Tips and ideas as well as insights.
