The Berenstain Bears' Big Book of Science and Nature {Poppins Book Nook}

This months theme for the Poppins Book Nook is The Great Outdoors. Winter has finally arrived in Melbourne and the cold has well and truly set in making us rather loath to enjoy the great outdoors.  The one thing I truly enjoy about books is they have the ability to take you places without leaving the comfort of your home.

This month we have chosen to enjoy a few books on nature.  We have enjoyed The Burgess Bird Book for Children and focusing on  The Berenstain Bears Nature Guide (Almost everything small bears and kids need to know about... the animals, the plants, the earth itself, with actual facts about frogs, possums, birds, fish, trees, rocks, lady bugs, earthquakes ... and lots more).  This is part of our The Berenstein Bears Big Book of Science and Nature book. We have also enjoyed The year at Maple Hill Farm.

This month I have been inspired once again to start Nature Journaling and so Sir N and I are preparing to make journals.  We have gone on a few field trips and taken photographs to capture the beauty around us.  It's amazing to see what is out there even in the middle of winter.  We have been sharing our pictures on Instagram.  Our accounts are:  Macro_Passion and Explorer Pugsley.

We took some time to explore the zoo and Sir N took this beautiful photograph of the serval there which was featured on the Zoo Facebook page.

Portrait class {Virtual Fridge}

This Week
We have slowly been working our way through a video art class by Graham Braddock called Real Drawing for Kids!  So far we have completed a still life drawing and a drawing of a kitten.  I so wish I had had art class by this gentleman when I was at school.  He has the most amazing way of explaining how to draw and place the parts of your pictures onto the page.  I highly recommend his art classes if you can attend them but if not you can purchase a three class DVD series from him.You can also purchase these as a download.We decided to use a layout guide for the portrait class and will be reattempting this class next year when the students are a little older.

  • ISBN 13:9780141314822

Thanks to a friends excellent 10 cent library purchase Paul and Sir N have been enjoying Toad Heaven.  All I have heard for the past three days are gales of laughter and giggles of delight as they've met Limpy and his family.  Limpy is a cane toad living in Queensland Australia. Cane toads are vermin here in Australia and so their antics with the humans are really funny to read.  Limpy is the slightly squashed cane toad and the hero of the story.  In this book he is in search of a nature reserve for him and his friends.  For some reason nothing ever seems to go to play for the delightful trio.  This book definitely appeals to boy humour and is perfect for reading ages 8-10.

There are a total of four books in the series
  1. Toad Rage
  2. Toad Heaven
  3. Toad Away
  4. Toad Surprise
