Beverly Cleary her first book - Henry Huggins

I was deeply sadened to hear about the passing of beloved children's book author Beverley Cleary this past weekend.  I first encountered her writing when reading out loud to my children when we first started Sonlight* and were reading Henry Huggins together which is a part of their  Intro to World History Year 1.

Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary

  • Format Paperback | 155 pages
  • Dimensions 127 x 190 x 15.24mm | 113g
  • Publisher HarperCollins Publishers Inc
  • Language English Edition Statement 50th ed.
  • ISBN10 0380709120
  • ISBN13 9780380709120

From Book Depository - "Just as Henry Huggins is complaining that nothing exciting ever happens, a friendly dog sits down beside him and looks pleadingly at his ice-cream cone. From that moment on, the two are inseparable. But when Ribsy's original owner appears, trying to reclaim his dog, Henry's faced with the possibility of losing his new best friend. Has Klickitat Street seen the last of rambunctious Ribsy?"

My Thoughts - From the first page we were hooked.  We loved every moment of being introduced to Henry and Ribsy.  We laughed at his antics we learned from his love of life and together they introduced us to the joys of homeschooling.

Henry and Ribsy by Beverly Cleary

  • Format Paperback | 208 pages
  • Dimensions 127 x 188 x 15mm | 136g
  • Publisher HarperCollins Publishers Inc
  • anguage English Edition
  • ISBN10 0380709171
  • ISBN13 9780380709175

From Book Depository - "In this humorous and heartfelt novel from Newbery Medal-winning author Beverly Cleary, the bond between a boy and his dog proves strong, as Henry vows to stick up for Ribsy...even if he is a trouble-maker!

From the first moment Henry found Ribsy, the curious mutt was poking his nose into things he shouldn't be. Whether terrorizing the garbage man, chasing cats, or gobbling Ramona Quimby's ice-cream cone, Henry's four-legged pal has walked himself into one problem too many. So when Henry asks his dad if he can go along on the big fishing trip, Mr. Huggins agrees, but on one condition: Ribsy must stay out of mischief for two whole months. Henry is confident in his loyal dog...until Ribsy goes overboard with his appetite for chaos...literally!"

My Thoughts This book had us laughing together and bonding as a family.  I loved being snuggled together with my children reading out loud about Ribsy's antics.  I couldn't wait to be reaquainted with the characters for the second round with Nathaniel.

Here are a few other titles we enjoyed together by Beverley Cleary

About the Author

Beverly Cleary died at age 104 on Sunday 25 March 2021. She shared her Oregon childhood memories through her colourful characters like Ramona and Beezus Quimby and Henry Huggins.

She was born in 1916. She served as a children's librarian. Her first book Henry Huggins was published in 1950 and was the first in a series of fictional chapter books about Henry , his dog Ribsy, his neighborhood friend Beezus and her little sister Ramona.  She based the characters on people living ordinary lives and her own childhood experiences and the neighborhood growing up.

She has been awarded multiple awards for her writing, there is a statue of Ramona Quimby in Grant Park and the Beverly Cleary School.

She was named a Living Legened in 2000 by the Library of Congress.

"I believe in that 'missionary spirit' among children's librarians. Kids deserve books of literary quality, and librarians are so important in encouraging them to read and selecting books that are appropriate." Beverly Cleary

Knights in Training {Book Review}

As I grow older and am watching the world around me change daily, often my heart is left grieving for the principles which governed our daily lives from days of old.  From the time when community were united in their views and all children respected community values. We have been blessed with three children who are 23, 21 and 12. Years ago I discovered that their was Jewish Ancestry in my family line and as a result started learning about transitioning children to adults and having a ceremony to mark this important event in the lives of my children. I searched for literature and found wonderful resources.  However most of these told of the virtues to teach but non of them contained a detailed how to or even why to do so.  Today I am super excited to share KNIGHTS IN TRAINING: Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous, and Compassionate Boys by Heather Haupt with you.

Review
In the beginning Heather lays a solid foundation to Knighthood and raising boys with purpose.  I have been underlining points of interest which I intended to share with you but in all honesty I would be re-writing the book!  Every page is full of thought provoking insights which have challenged my thinking and inspired me to stop saying things like: "Boys will be boys".  This book is not the kind of book you can skim to get the gist of.  It's the kind of parenting support manual that you want to take notes in and have on hand to refer to often.

I appreciate the way that Heather has laid out the book.  Knights in Training is 277 pages of  pure gold.  It is divded into three parts:

  • The Boy Raising Adventure - Heather lays a foundation to raising sons with purpose. Heather encourages us to raise boys that are not typical.
  • The Chivalry Challenge -  Chapter six to fifteen takes each separate statute and expands upon it.  Precept upon precept each code builds on the one before.  The first code  (Love the Lord Your God with Your Hear, Soul, Mind and Strength) is the basis for each of the codes which follow. Each of the codes are defined, practical suggestions, examples from her own family followed by some challenges for you to choose and apply to the young Knights in Training in your family. (Sword fights, polishing silver, jousting, playing games and serving others to name a few.)
  • Continuing the Quest - Heather answers the question behind how do we make these things stick and become the foundation upon which our sons build their character.

One of my favourtie parts of this book is it's practical tips. Heather provides actual steps to take. We are given the wording of example conversations to have with our children. This is actual training we do with our boys – physical, emotional, and spiritual – and the book is full of practical tips to help us accomplish it in real life.

On her blog Heather has a fabulous list of recommended living books to give our boys real life and imaginary heroes that are worth emulating.
About the Book
Based on the Knights’ Code of Chivalry as depicted in the French epic Song of Roland, KNIGHTS IN TRAINING outlines ten character-building codes that teach boys the importance of respecting women, pursuing excellence, loving God, and standing against injustice.

In this accessible and much-needed guide, parents will learn the importance of:
  • Creating a micro-culture that mirrors their values
  • Mindful media consumption (i.e. why you don’t want your sons watching Frozen!)
  • Play weapons and how rules for engagement teaches boys courtesy
  • The essential role of faith and its impact on our actions, our place in the world, and our ability to honor the other
  • Discouraging potty humor - even if it promotes reading
  • Learning the art of disagreeing
Inspirational and practical, KNIGHTS IN TRAINING is an invaluable source for parents searching for a counter cultural way to ensure that their sons grow up independent, self-sufficient, and fulfilled. Knights in training is bibilically sound and practical on every level.

Teach your boys chivalry and one day they’ll slay dragons. With the help of the Lord, they can fight off the enemies of laziness, selfishness, and pridefulness. They’ll stand up for what is true and right!

The Mysterious Benedict Society Collection {Tuesday's Treasures}

One of the hardest things to do is find books for boys that are not filled with potty humour!  I was very pleased when I heard about The Mysterious Benedict Society on a Charlotte Mason Facebook Australia Group and decided to see if our local library had it.  Much to our delight they had all four books.  When they first arrived Nathaniel looked at the thick books and promptly assigned me the task of reading the books out loud to him.
Filled with page-turning action and mind-bending brain teasers, these wildly inventive journeys are sure to delight. - Book Depository
How do I KNOW these are good books?
At this stage Nathaniel was only attempting to read 200 page books (with large type) and these 400 page books containing much smaller print just overwhelmed him.  He finished one of his own books and I suggested he attempt book number two in the series and after much encouragement took the book to bed with him.  It was only a couple of days and each time we came to say lights out he would beg for five more minutes in order to finish one more page!  I was shocked at how enthusiastic my son was to read these books.  In the space of time it's taken me to read book one out loud to him he has completed book 2 and book 3 in the series (Nearly 900 pages in less than a month). We are now patiently waiting for book 4 to arrive from the library.

What is it all about?

"Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?"When this peculiar ad appears in the newspaper, dozens of children enroll to take a series of mysterious, mind-bending tests. (And you, dear reader, can test your wits right alongside them.) But in the end just four very special children will succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and resourceful children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. As our heroes face physical and mental trials beyond their wildest imaginations, they have no choice but to turn to each other for support. But with their newfound friendship at stake, will they be able to pass the most important test of all?Welcome to the Mysterious Benedict Society.
We are still reading book one out loud and both of us are loving every page.  In book one we are introduced to the five central characters of:  Mr. Nicholas Benedict, George "Sticky" Washington, Kate Wetherall, Reynard "Reynie" Muldoon and Constance Contraire.  Each day is a journey to discover the secret on Nomansan Island.  The children are in a race against time to find the island's secret and save the world.  Each of the four posses a special talent and each day they are learning to trust each other and discover things about themselves they didn't' know.  The names are all very clever and full of hints to help you solve the puzzle of the Island.

(Watch a trailer of the movie on YouTube) and explore the Mysterious Benedict Society on the web.

There are four books in the series:
  1. The Mysterious Benedict Society
  2. The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey
  3. The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma
  4. The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict
Nathaniel has really enjoyed this series so much he is saving his pocket money to purchase the boxed set for himself!

What are some of your favourite books for boys?

  • ISBN 13:9780141314822

Thanks to a friends excellent 10 cent library purchase Paul and Sir N have been enjoying Toad Heaven.  All I have heard for the past three days are gales of laughter and giggles of delight as they've met Limpy and his family.  Limpy is a cane toad living in Queensland Australia. Cane toads are vermin here in Australia and so their antics with the humans are really funny to read.  Limpy is the slightly squashed cane toad and the hero of the story.  In this book he is in search of a nature reserve for him and his friends.  For some reason nothing ever seems to go to play for the delightful trio.  This book definitely appeals to boy humour and is perfect for reading ages 8-10.

There are a total of four books in the series
  1. Toad Rage
  2. Toad Heaven
  3. Toad Away
  4. Toad Surprise

Tuesdays Treasures {27} - G.A. Henty

Welcome to Tuesdays Treasures.  I started these posts as a way of sharing great books in honour of my friend in New Zealand who would arrive with the treasures she had unearthed at her weekly trip to the library!

There are so many wonderful books out there hiding on shelves so I invite you to blog about a book on your shelf, one you're reading or one you found at the library and add your post to Learning All the Time Favourite Resource Link Up.

I was over at Princess Warrior Lessons where Jo was speaking about Boys and Books on her blog.  This got me wondering what other great books are there out there for boys.  A few months back I talked about The Little Britches Series and

This week ...

I would like to introduce you to G.A. Henty.

To quote Preston Speed Publications about Mr Henty: "Henty's stories revolve around a fictional boy hero during fascinating periods of history. His heroes are diligent, courageous, intelligent and dedicated to their country and cause in the face, at times, of great peril. His histories, particularly battle accounts, have been recognized by historian scholars for their accuracy. In fact, the only criticism Henty faced by the liberals of his day was that his heroes were "too Christian." There is nothing dry in Mr. Henty's stories and thus he removes the drudgery and laborious task often associated with the study of history."

We first encountered Mr Henty's brilliant story telling when we read

A Tale of Ancient Egypt

  • Format: Paperback
  • Number of Pages: 308
  • Vendor:  Dover Publications
  • Publication Date:
  • ISBN: 0486423638
  • Author G.A. Henty
Preston Speed says about these books: Henty's heroes fight wars, sail the seas, discover land, conquer evil empires, prospect for gold, and a host of other exciting adventures. They meet famous personages like Josephus, Titus, Hannibal, Robert the Bruce, Sir William Wallace, Sir Francis Drake, Moses, Robert E. Lee, Frederick the Great, the Duke of Wellington, Huguenot leader Coligny, Cortez, King Alfred, and Napoleon just to mention a few. Henty's heroes live through tumultuous historic eras meeting the leaders of that time. Understanding the culture of the time period becomes second nature as well as comparing/contrasting the society of various European and pagan cultures
I could not have said it any better myself.  You can safely buy these books and give them to your sons and daughters to read.

Many of the Henty titles are currently FREE** for your Kindle on Amazon !

Tuesday's Treasures 1-11 Little Britches Series

Little Britches
Format: Paperback
Number of Pages: 260
Vendor: University Of Nebraska Press
Publication Date: 1991
ISBN: 0803281781
ISBN-13: 9780803281783

IF I was only allowed to purchase one series of books for boys to read this would be the one I would choose. Cost wise they are a little more expensive but well worth the price.

The Ralph Moody Collection has been one of the most amazing journey's we have undertaken as a family.  My older two roses would sit waiting at the window for daddy to come home and when he arrived would race out to the car begging "Daddy PLEASE read to us!"

In fact I suffered a sever lack of self control during this series of books and hid away from the children with one of the books reading to find out what would happen when my daughter found me red handed in the act and said "Mommy that's NOT fair!!!"  I can only use one word to describe this series and it's :BRILLIANT

My Father is an avid reader of historical non fiction borrowed these and enjoyed them.

Paul said he really enjoyed the sense of adventure and old fashioned simplicity of the books.

Sonlight sell this as a Six Volume Set of books or  Eight Volume Set of Books.

One word of warning about the series is that some of the books contain colourful language.   I took a friends advice and simply took to the books with a dark texta and erased them.

These books are Mr Moody's memories of growing up in the early part of the 20th Century.  They illustrate amazing character and fortitude and the ability to get up again and again regardless of circumstances.

I can't remember the order in which to read these books.  When I am able to access my collection I will update this post with the order in which to read this series. I am really looking forward to when Sir N is around 12 years old to reading these out loud together.

Do you have any series of books that have stood out among your library ?
