Introducing the 2015 Homeschool High School Blog Hop

Homeschooling through the high school years places fear in the hearts of many a home schooler both veteran and new. I remember years ago once people were used to the idea of us home educating the very next question was always "Are you going to homeschool for High School?" or "How will you teach ... ?"

A couple of months ago a few home school friends were asking one another for help in finding information on home educating through the high school years when we realised that many of us had graduated students from our home schools but had not really shared our experience on home educating through the high school years, so we talked about sharing our knowledge with you and create a keepsake for ourselves on our blogs.  There are 18 of us on this journey and we will be sharing what we have learned along the way, what we are learning now and what we aim for over the years to come.

Home Schooling in High School is a time of great change in many homes, one that can be exciting, daunting and fearful.  Our aim is to lift the veil on homeschooling through the high school years, in order to equip and encourage you. You are more than able to home school your children all the way through to graduation.

Home School High School Topics

Over the next seven months we will be sharing some insights into the following aspects of home educating through the high school years
  • 24 June - Planning for High School {How and When,ways to/how we're planning to earn college credit while still in high school, Meeting High School Requirements, how to assign credit when there aren't tests, What records do you keep? How do you present them? What influences your method, your emphasis in certain areas?}
  • 29 July - Electives {Following Passions, following interests, fitting a job in with school, and Being intentional in Preparing for what comes after high school, Life skills.}
  • 26 August - Math, Science, Biology, History {What do you use ? Why do you use ... ? What influences your choices/selection? }
  • 30 September - Language Arts {Poetry, Literature, Composition, writing, What influenced your choices/selection?}
  • 28 October - "How am I going to teach High School ...?" {Addressing the fear factor of teaching subjects we struggle with or know nothing about, How to achieve credit in subjects your student *hates*}
  • 25 November - How do you fit it all in ? {homeschooling high school alongside homeschooling the others, Fostering Independence, Do you generalise or specialise? Schedules,}
  • 30 December - Graduation { Fostering Independence, How do you know when they are done ?}

Introducing your Home School High School Hosts

We pray that you will be encouraged and inspired to home school your children through the high school years.

Dear Mom Who is Feeling Overwhelmed

Your soul aches from the secret doubts and fears.
You lie awake at night allowing fear to gnaw at your insides

In those moments questions flood your soul
  • Why does it feel like this?
  • Why is it so hard?
  • Why do I feel like a constant failure?
  • Why is it that every choice feels like one that is wrong?
  • Why does it feel like somehow I will NEVER measure up and be successful at this journey of MOTHERHOOD?
  • Why do I constantly feel overwhelmed?
I too wrestle with these haunting questions that feel like a millstone of agony around my heart.
Oh Lord I've cried out in my heart, "Your word says Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him." so why does this feel so deeply painful and bone wearying?

And then His gentle voice whispers to my heart ...

                    ... Be True to Yourself

WHAT do you mean Lord ?

And once again I feel His presence ...

                              ... Be True to Yourself

The echo of this statement hangs in the air with breathless anticipation. I can feel it's the key to set me FREE...

I ponder these words:  Be TRUE to YOURSELF

As I contemplate my feelings it became clearer. When I started my journey first as a new Mother then as a  homeschooling Mom I was full of excitement and anticipation. I attended any and all meetings, listened avidly to all the conversations, diligently sought advice on different issues, carefully looked over anything new on the market, attended all the trips that fit our very tight budget and constantly strived to grow. It was all new and exhilarating. I looked forward to each monthly meeting, any conference and the fortnightly co-op meetings.

Each time I heard what someone was doing that sounded wonderful I added it to my list of what we were doing. After all what I could see them doing seemed to add to their success so if I did it too I would be successful ... I loved the results of what each of these families were doing and wanted that fruit for my family. As the years went by I began to become bone weary.

“Oh Lord I am sooo very tired, I just can’t anymore….” I slowed down, carefully chose what we did do and slowly over time my strength returned but my heart still ached with inadequacy and His voice keeps whispering to my soul

 “Be true to YOURSELF”

I have spent some time meditating on His words to my spirit and looking back it has become clearer. I now know what He is saying to my heart.

Each time I had attended a meeting I would watch all the Mom's there, comparing what we did with what they were doing.  After all they were further along this journey then me they must know what to do. I would then take note of what each of these Mom’s (who in my eyes were successful) were doing and I would take their way of doing things and try to add it to mine. I thought that if I somehow could do it the way they were I would be successful.  It never occurred to me to take the new idea to the Lord in prayer and seek Him to see if it was for us.

I now realise that if the Lord wanted ALL those things for my children He would have placed my children in their families. He did not. He chose my family and I had not been TRUE to myself and who HE had made me. I had added all these carbon copies and the burden was too heavy for me and for my children.

I had been trying to mold myself to look like these super successful Mothers.

In Colossians 3:1 it says: Set your hearts on things above. This is the key to setting you free and healing your heart. We need to focus on Him and His design for our families and not strive in the flesh to perform or become what someone else is.

I had been trying to do all these things to be successful in the worlds eyes and had taken my eyes off HIM. He has been reminding me to ask Him and He will show me. I need to Trust in Him with all of my heart and lean not on my own understanding. As I acknowledge Him in ALL my ways He will make my path straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6).

My encouragement to you is to take your eyes off your friends (especially the super successful ones),  and place them firmly on your Lord.

He has a plan for you and it is a good plan. Your children, your home and your husband are a good and perfect gift from Him to YOU.  His word in in James 1:17 reminds us that 'Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.' He makes no mistakes.

In His word this week He reminded me: 'Come to me all you who are heavy laden and find rest for your souls' (Matthew 11:28-30). If you are exhausted or feeling overwhelmed take some time. STOP what you are doing. Prayerfully take it before your Heavenly Father and seek His heart for your family. Be TRUE to yourself and who He has made you. When He formed you He placed within you all you would need through Him to succeed (Philippians4:13) at the task He has placed before you.

He is the good Shepherd and He gently leads those that have young (Isaiah 40:11) Dear Mother that is YOU! His yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and His burden is light and easy to be borne. He calls out to you to take His yoke upon you and to learn from Him, for he is gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief) and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls (paraphrase of Matthew 11:28-30).

This rest is found in being TRUE TO YOURSELF and whom He has created you to be.

Take some time to write a list of all the good things and meditate upon these and when life becomes overwhelming take some time to read your list and remind yourself to be TRUE to whom He created YOU to be.

Blessings
Chareen

Day 1 of our Real Life Homeschool

Real Life Homeschool Blog Hop
Welcome to day ONE of this weeks show and tell brought to you by the Schoolhouse Review Crew.  Often times when we look at blogs we see the picture perfect homeschool lives that bloggers choose for you to see.  This week however 52 homeschool families have decided to give you a look at our day to day lives.

My goal is to give you a peek into what homeschooling looks like for us.  We are a Christian, eclectic, mostly Sonlight, Charlotte Mason driven homeschool.  I have been homeschooling for  17 years and over time I have discovered that I love the principles of a Charlotte Mason model, along with chronological history and Sonlight Curriculum.

To be honest with you there is NO such thing as a typical homeschool family.  Each and every family has their own unique way of doing things.  Please do not read the posts in this series with the view of copying what we do as that's a sure fire recipe for failure.  It's important in your homeschool journey to find out what works for you and follow that path.

As a family we tend to be fairly flexible in our approach because Paul works a rotating roster which means that each week he is home on different days. This year I started working part time as a Social Media Assistant for the Old Schoolhouse. As a result we are trying to establish a new routine and find a rhythm that will work well for us.

Nathaniel

Nathaniel is currently my only student.  My first two children have graduated.  Timothy is currently looking at tertiary study options and Jane is currently taking a GAP year and traveling around the world.

 Our Morning
Today my day began at 7 am due it being Paul's first day back on his roster.  He left for work at 7:30 am and I looked over The Busy Homeschool Mom's Guide to Daylight. I am feeling really encouraged reading this book. Heidi St John shares some wonderful down to earth encouragement and practical advice.We had breakfast and a slow morning due to it being a public holiday in Australia. Nathaniel had breakfast and then I did a session of Walk Strong by Leslie Sansone.

Jane
Next I rang Jane in America and we had a wonderful time chatting for an hour. Next it was Nathaniel's turn to chat to her.  We've really been enjoying having access to her via Skype, Facebook and land line. This is her first Easter away from home so it was really good to be able to catch up with her about what she's been doing and where she's been going.

Netflix recently launched in Australia and we are currently making use of their introductory offer of one month free viewing. Since it's a public holiday we decided to do some TV schooling.

We watched:
  1. Horrible Histories Series One Episode One (sample on YouTube) We learned a lot of horrible history.  Some of the things we learned were: What did the German soldiers eat in the second World War, The Four King Georges, Rules on a Pirate Ship (did you know they had an 8 pm bed time ?), the burial traditions of Ancient Rome and how this became the foundation of the Gladiator Games, the lice problems the troops encountered in WW1 and some points of interest about Vikings.
  2.  The Great Ship which is part of The Seven Wonders of the Industrial World series. SS Great Eastern was designed by IK Brunel and built in London.  The ship was revolutionary in that it had a double hull, she was launched in 1858. Due to her size she was eventually used to lay cable across the oceans between continents.
  3. Walking with Dinosaurs episode one from the BBC. Neither of us were particularly impressed with this series after episode one.
Our Afternoon
Lunch time was enjoyed in the beautiful autumn sunshine outside. We enjoyed a cuppa together before we came back inside to tackle the house keeping chores.

Once the chores were completed I allowed Nathaniel to watch a children's movie on Netflix whilst I tackled some work I promised a friend help with online.

Jo popped by to give her son a hand with taking his things back home.  It was so good to connect with Jo and find out how things are going with Build Aid.  This amazing family are helping missionaries overseas to build their accommodation and schooling.  They are currently working in Vanuatu.

I wrote a note to Jane.

Paul arrived home from work and had managed to capture some wonderful photographs of a Flame Robin.  If you love wildlife photography I encourage you to follow him on Instagram. His username is servalpaul

Our Evening
I cooked dinner consisting of stir fried mince over fried cauli' rice and cabbage salad. We watched two episodes of Eureka and at 8:15 pm Nathaniel went to bed.

8:00 - 9:30 I spent blogging and then joined Paul to watch the second half of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

11 PM Bed Time

As I mentioned before not a typical day for us due to it being a public holiday.  I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Blessings
Chareen

Year 4 Curriculum {NBTS}

It's week 2 of the Not Back to School blog hop being hosted here and at Our Worldwide Classroom.  This week we are sharing our proposed curriculum for 2015.  Don't forget to meet some of our amazing homeschool blogging families in Australia.

Our plan is to take 12 - 18 months with the following books.

Sonlight Core B

This year my aim with Nathaniel is to add in some more Charlotte Mason educational principles.  This is a learning journey for both of us as in the past I have followed Sonlight and the Well Trained Mind.  I really enjoy teaching / learning history chronologically so my aim is to complete Sonlight Core B this year and flow into Core C.

Readers
Read Alouds
Last year we did not get to most of our read alouds due to taking the scenic route and reading aloud a whole raft of other books so this year we plan on doing two read aloud periods a day.  In the morning doing Core B and afternoon Core C

 Fine Arts
  • We will continue using The World's Greatest Composers by Confessions of a Homeschooler.
  • The Classical Kids Collection Vol 1 & 2. These are produced by The Children's Group and cover the lives of eight famous composers.
  • Classical Composers Monthly as a supplement to whichever composer we are studying.
  • We will continue with The World's Greatest Artists Vol 1.  We have already studied Claude Monet {FREE Resource List} and will continue and learn about the other seven artists in the unit.
  • We did Shipwrecked earlier in the year and really enjoyed it so we will work our way through Bible Stories by See the Light
  • In an ideal world I would love to do some Hymn study too.  I have not settled on anything.  I think we might alternate Composer Study with Hymn Study.
  • We will be meeting up with a family each week where we will continue to learn to play the recorder as well as work our way through drawing lessons from the Drawing Textbook.
  • I am also in the process of reseaching the Charlotte Mason philosophy on the Fine Arts.
  • This year we also intend on attending a few MSO concerts and a ballet concert.
Sonlight Core C

History
This year we will continue reading Story of The World Volume One and using the Activity Guide which goes alongside it.  Core B and C also do History chronologically so I will be consulting my manuals and using the recommended read alouds and spines from Sonlight.

Geography
 I haven't decided yet upon a resource to use.  Here are a few I'm contemplating using

 I think we may continue using Expedition Earth: A Journey through God's World.

I would like to also complete  Trail Guide to World Geography  This particular package is my all time favourite.

I saw a review on Wonder Maps and really like the look of this program.  Have any of you used it or seen it ?

Math

Logic

Science

For science we will choose books from our very well stocked home library this year and will be working through Exploring Creation with Astronomy from Apologia.  We will be using the Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal.  Once we have completed this we will begin Exploring Creation with Botany.

For hands on Science we shall continue with Science Activities, Vol. 1
Language Arts
Composition
We will be continuing with WriteShop Primary this year.  This program is an excellent way to introduce composition to reluctant writers and primary school aged students.

Spelling
Last year I began using Logic of English with Sir N and was really impressed with his progress.  This year we will continue our lessons with the goal of completing the program.

Vocabulary
This is not synonymous with spelling. We will continue to work though Spelling Workout starting with book B this year. I am also compiling a list of classical books we will be using as read alouds throughout the year ahead.

Grammar
I haven't yet settled on a grammar program.  I have two books I'm considering.  The first being English for The Thoughtful Child by Mary Hyde OR Karen Andreola's Simply Grammar: An Illustrated Primer.

Narration
This is something I want to focus more on this year with Sir N.  There are so many incredible benefits to the student in developing this skill.

Second Language
This year we will begin studying two other languages: Latin and French
For Latin I will be using two programs Prima Latina and  Getting Started with Latin
For French we will begin using  Rosetta Stone

No doubt due to our eclectic tendencies and as I learn more about applying a Charlotte Mason approach to our home education this will change.  I will update this list as I make changes to suit our learning.

Blessings
Chareen
This list is current as of 9 February 2015

It's your turn.
Looking forward to reading your plans for the year ahead.

Language Arts {Virtual Curriculum Fair}

Welcome to my first post for the 2014 Virtual Curriculum Fair.  Today I'm sharing on Language Arts, both what we do and some of the curriculum that is available in the homeschool market to help you with Language Arts in your homeschool.

I shared some of my thoughts on language arts in high school in two posts: Writing and Composition in High School as well as The Art of Language in High School.

In our homeschool we are following an eclectic approach this year incorporating a Charlotte Mason approach along with Delight Directed education and Sonlight.  We are working on strengthening Sir N's writing skills through copy work and hand writing practice.

We are currently working on narration skills at the moment as I have come to realise that it certainly pays high dividends in the high school years with the fruit of a student who is able to "Attend, remember, visualize, comprehend, synthesize (see the whole from the parts), and articulate as the result." A Charlotte Mason Companion page 115.  Narration helps a child to train his/her mind to "sort, arrange, correlate, select, reject and classify" information. A Charlotte Mason
"Narration develops the power of self expression and forces the child to use his own mind and form his own judgement." - Karen Andreola A Charlotte Mason Companion page 114Companion page 115.

Spelling is the servant necessary to be successful in all the areas of written language arts. We will be using copy work and once we have completed Explode the Code book 3 we will be working our way through Spelling Workout.

Vocabulary is not synonymous with spelling and is often times missed in language arts programs and deserves equal mention and attention. Twaddle free literature introduces new words in context to the student. Do not make the mistake of only choosing literature that your child can read to themselves.

Poetry enlarges a students language ability and teaches the clever use of words in self expression.  With this in mind we will be enjoying poetry together.  As Sir N gains confidence in public speaking we will add in poems to learn and present with expression. We will try different types of poetry until we find some that we like and then explore it further.  Poetry comments on all human experiences, it is comprised of everything  from war poems and epics, to psalms of worship, to love sonnets, to delightful nonsense verse that trips off the tongue, to nursery rhymes - CMC Page 220

Anticipating the Butterfly

Meet my daughter whose name means
Beautiful Anointed one who is a gift of the Lord

On this blog she is known as Miss J.  We received confirmation of our pregnancy two days after Christmas 18 years ago.  We had a wonderful pregnancy.  Our journey to finding Miss J's name was an interesting one. I was pregnant with two of my friends and we lived in a rural farming community. We had a name chosen for a girl during our first pregnancy it was Sarah J******.  Paul had been praying that we have a daughter and we looked forward to calling her Princess.

Five months into our pregnancy my friend birthed a beautiful daughter and called her - Sarah.  At the time we were living in a rural community. Normally when you live in a rural community it's for a life time and I felt we needed to choose a new name for a girl because if our daughters were going to be in the same class I did not want them to have the same names.  After much prayer and name book searching we found a new name.  Jessica Anne.  Three months later my second friend birthed her first born and named her - Jessica Anne.  We were surprised.  We still felt we wanted a unique name for our baby if it was a daughter.

Four weeks later we were still searching for a name when I went into labour at four am. We had not settled on a name. As I laboured we searched for a name.  Paul read out names and we discussed them. One of the things I really wanted in names for our children was that they would be a blessing every time we spoke to our children. An hour before her birth we settled on her names.

Anticipation
One of the things we do as parents when we are pregnant is we have this deep sense of expectation and anticipation for our children. We dream of a life of possibility. When I began homeschooling there was an added sense of anticipation of what we would do in the high school years

One of the things I did not expect was how quickly things change. One moment I thought we had another three years of home schooling followed by a few years of tertiary education and the next it all changed.  An opportunity came up for Miss J to attend college at 15 and study towards her Cert III in Children's Services.  Miss J graduated in January last year. Has since worked full time and moved out of home six months ago.

The teen years hold so many possibilities for us and for our children.

Hold on lightly
Today Susan's words spoke to my heart -
Perhaps the hardest part is
letting them be,
letting them become,
and releasing them to God’s Will.
Come what may.

This is the hardest part of all Mom's in their journeys as Mothers.

I would like to encourage you mom's with little ones enjoy each moment time is short.  To you Mom's of middle year children treasure the exploring, the moment you have now is fleeting.

To you Mom's of the teen look at these years with the anticipation of seeing His perfect plan for your child unfold, hold on lightly and release them to find who the Father has made them to be. They are created in His image and not the image of your dreams.

And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you. Philippians 1:6

May you be blessed as you step back and anticipate seeing the fullness of His plan unfold before you for your children.

Blessings
Chareen
