HSMJ - Discovering Mali

In my life this week…
Its been a rather busy but fruitful week.  On Tuesday afternoon I went to the local CHEF (Christian Home Educating Families) meeting where I met a teacher from the local Steiner School who is a Christian.  She came to share some insights into the Steiner method of education with us.  I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her and felt so encouraged in my role as a homeschooler and the privilege it is. There are a few of the Steiner methods that I would like to implement in my homeschooling one of them being the three day cycle of learning. I am still doing some research on this and will write more about it in the future.
In our homeschool this week…

A trip to the Zoo to celebrate their 150th birthday.
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
I am inspired by…
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
  • Saturday -Visited Mr T in hospital.
  • Sunday - Spent the day at home and caught up on reading.
  • Monday - It was a busy day today and the best part was fetching Mr T from hospital.  He is still having some ongoing issues so we do still covert your prayer cover and support.
  • Tuesday - Paul's birthday.  It was a lovely day and we celebrated with great friends and family as well as a trip to Melbourne Zoo.
  • Wednesday - A day at home.
  • Thursday - Today is Mrs G birthday and she shares it with Miss B so they cam over to celebrate birthdays with cake and tea at our home.
  • Friday - Today was a great day too. This morning we enjoyed school, went to lunch at Aunty M's house and had a play date at Mrs T's house.  This evening we watched a documentary on Melbourne Zoo's 150 years.  We also prepared for a trip away tomorrow. We also managed to book tickets to see Maximus Musicus with the MSO in November.

My favorite thing this week was…

What’s working/not working for us…

Questions/thoughts I have…
  • How much written work would you expect of a seven year old ?
Things I’m working on…
  • Mentally sorting out how I will be using Sonlight with more of a Charlotte Mason approach and the Steiner three day cycle.
  • Figuring out how to use my new homeschool / home planner.
  • How and what we will do in regards to teaching Shakespeare and Dickens.
On My Bedside Table ...
  •  Is my Charlotte Mason Companion and Teaching the Trivium.
In Bloggy world I’m reading…
I’m cooking…
  • Nothing new.
On Pinterest I found...

I’m grateful for…
  •  The families who have prayed for us diligently over the last two weeks and new friends.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." ~ Mark Twain

Carnival of the Animals at Melbourne Zoo

Just arrived and find a spot to sit.
The main reason for our trip to the Melbourne Zoo on Monday was to to watch the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform Carnival of the Animals.

This member from the MSO sat on the floor and chatted with the kids.
He explained to Sir N which instrament he plays and let him look and touch the mallets he uses to play.
The 11 member performing arrived tuned their instruments. Once they were ready the conductor came out and introduced the instruments and Noni Hazlehurst who was our host and read an adaptation of Ogden Nash's Poem between each section of music.  It was a wonderful introduction to the Orchestra.

Members of the MSO tuning up and preparing for the conductor and performance.

Did you know that the MSO performs Free concerts ?  The next one will be at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in February 2013. Coming up in November is the MSO Classic Kids! Maximus Musicus.
