Time 4 Learning {Review}

For the past month Sir N has been using Time 4 Learning as part of his daily home school routine. He has been working through Grade 2 in the lower level student area. Time 4 Learning is a complete on line curriculum from PreK to 12th Grade.

The longer we use this resource the more I discover.  There are some wonderful gems available.  I discovered recently that there is a Time 4 Art resource available as well as Time 4 Writing. The system is a fully automated on line tutoring that is self graded and keeps transcripts for you. Time 4 Learning can be used as the spine for your homeschool program, an after school program or a summer learning program.

To view any of the graphics in more detail please click on them for a full screen preview.

What we received
We received a six month membership on a Grade 2 level covering the following subject areas
  • Language Arts Extensions 22 Chapters and each of these had two lessons and a quiz review. {315 activities}
  • Language Arts 9 Chapters containing an average of three sections each. {210 Activities} You can view a complete list of spelling words for second grade on line. Each lesson covers phonics, reading, comprehension, vocabulary, reading fluency and grammar.
  • Math 20 Chapters. Each of these were divided into smaller chapters which in turn are broken down into lessons finishing with a quiz.
  • Science 3 Chapters.  6 with 14 lessons and 6 quizzes. {21 Activities}
  • Social Studies 4 Topics,  11 Chapters with 14 lessons and quizzes {23 Activities}
What We Did
  • I registered as a parent to start and then enrolled Sir N.
  • He then logged in via the  Lower Level Student Log in page using his first name, last name and a password.
  • This then opened up the welcome page.  On the welcome page there are six menu options {start, intro, Playground, help, page colour and parent}
  • From the start page Sir N had access to five subject areas {Language Arts, Language Arts Extensions, Math, Science and Social Studies} He would click on a subject.
  • The next page would bring up the chapters in that subject.  There would be an arrow pointing to to chapter he was working on.  Once he had completed a chapter a green tick would appear over the graphic with the word "Completed" through it.  This made navigation super easy.  At a glance we could both see where he was.
  • Once he clicked on a chapter it would take him to the lesson page.  This worked the same way as the chapter icons.  Once he completed all the relevant activities a green tick with the word Completed appeared over the icon and an arrow would appear pointing to the next lesson for him to complete.
  • Once he clicked on the lesson a new page would open with a number of activities for him to work through.  Once completed he would then click on the Quiz.
  • In the Quiz he had the option of having the questions read to him.  They were all multiple choice type questions. Most of the quizzes contained ten questions.  Feedback was instant at the completion of the quiz we knew straight away which questions he had answered correctly and which ones were incorrect.
Screen shots of Time 4 Learning Grade 2

Each day we followed the same routine. This was really helpful as it took the guess work out of what we needed to do and gave Sir N confidence in his ability to proceed as he knew exactly what he had completed and what he needed to do next.

What I liked
  • I liked that I could look over a complete lesson plan for each grade and choose the level best suited for Sir N to work on.
  • Sir N was able to work at his own pace
  • Sir N is a beginner reader and most of the tests had the option of having the questions read to him.
  • There is a clutter free easy member log in page for the student
  • Easy navigation. Each navigation button contains a graphic to help non readers navigate. Upon hovering over a button there is also an audio prompt.
  • Students need to work for a minimum of 15 minutes before they can access the playground.
  • Most of the lessons use flash based technology which made them fun and kept Sir N's attention the whole time.  (Due to the use of flash technology Time 4 Learning can not be used on iPads, iPods and iPhones)
  • There is the ability to select which level to work on (1, 2 or 3) for each subject.
  • I liked that it is an automated system and is sequential.  Each lesson builds on the information from the lesson before.
  • It is flexible.  We were not locked into using the system during a specific time.  We could log in any time and from anywhere.
  • One of the great features of the classes is they are interactive. The student is taught a concept and then there is a question to answer or a small activity for them to do in order to reinforce their learning.
  • I also liked that it automatically graded his work, kept a log of his usage and summarised his activity by subject and activity.
  • A student portfolio in which you can see a day, week or month at a glance. You can see at what time your student logged in and worked on any subject.  The activity worked on, their score and the subject name for the particular activity partaken of.
  • In the portfolio section I was able to generate a student score card.  In this card there was the lesson name, date completed, time completed, score achieved, status (pass/fail) and duration in hours, minutes and seconds) for every single lesson we did in once place.
  • I could read this on line or generate a PDF document.

Our Opinion
We both enjoyed using Time 4 Learning. Sir N really enjoyed the teaching delivery method of interactive videos.  He found learning fun and he never complained when I said it's time for school.

The only negative experience we had was in the Social Studies section. The program assumed we are American citizens and therefore familiar with the annual public holidays and history of the country. This could easily be upgraded and taught in the same way the balance of the Social Studies lesson were. It made answering questions difficult and we had to guess in order to proceed.

I was pleased that we had access to the grades above and below for each subject area.  This gave us the freedom to customise his schooling and it also made more work available for Sir N to work through.  He really enjoyed the Science and Social Studies area and did extra work in these classes which meant that he completed his grade level within the month.

We will be continuing with the Math, Social Studies and Science area's of learning.

If you are looking for some fun interactive learning to supplement or provide a spine for your home school I would encourage you to look at Time 4 Learning.  If you are in crisis mode in your home school I would highly recommend you use Time 4 Learning for your students.

HELP There's NO money for Curriculum!

A while back I stumbled upon a post by Jimmie and Pam called: What if I had no money for a curriculum ?  This has been playing on my mind especially after sharing my extensive home library of books with you this week. I began thinking what would I do if there was NO money for any curriculum. As I pondered this question I came to realise that this question has a two fold answer. For most people reading this post they would have regular access to the Internet and for some people they would not own a computer much less have regular access to the Internet.

On the Internet
The Internet is fast becoming the new home school support network and we have some really generous home school mom's who have supplied some excellent resources. There are new resources being continually added to the Internet on a regular basis.

If I had access to the Internet and a reliable computer I would make use of this amazing resource. Earlier this year I shared over 90 links in a Homeschool for FREE Resource List.

You will find links to
  • Curriculum by Grade
  • Curriculum by Subject
  • Complete unit studies by subject and grade
  • Websites dedicated to compiling free curriculum by subject
  • Blogs that generously share what they find on the net by subject
  • Bloggers who have a weekly Freebie
  • Pinterest boards to get you started on finding free resources by subject. (you don't need an account to use these)
  • A list of veteran homeschoolers on Pinterest who have collected some amazing resources.
  • Facebook pages to like and follow that share where to source Free curriculum.
If you are a blogger I would encourage you to build a network of followers and then apply to be on the Schoolhouse Review Crew.  This would open up opportunities to receive curriculum for FREE in exchange for a review.  I estimate you would have access to an average of $ 1,000 worth of curriculum a year. Once you start doing this you would receive offers from other companies to review products.

No Internet
If I had no Internet access I would use public access Internet to  request a catalogue from Sonlight Curriculum. I love the Charlotte Mason philosophy of twaddle free literature and this company offers the best collection by grade I've ever come across.
  • Armed with this I would join my local library and home educate with the list of books provided.
  • Add in a couple of extra books that are interest led by your students.
  • Get your children to journal about what they are learning or do mini projects in a notebook.
  • Get to know your librarian and she will help you put together an amazing curriculum.
  • Libraries these days have some excellent math resources on hand.
  • Do old fashioned math. Memorise math facts daily.
  • Use a world map and memorise countries and their capital cities.
  • Frequent your local opportunity shop and see if you can find any treasures on their shelves.
  • Make friends with some local homeschool Mom's.  Most homeschool mom's I know are quiet happy to help, impart knowledge and or share their supplies.
  • Get to know the area you live in.  Visit the local park.  Read the signs.
  • Go to your nearest Tourist Information office and pick up brochures to learn about what you can do and see in your area.
  • Go to a travel agency and pick up a few travel brochures and do unit studies on the destinations talked about in the brochures.
  • Read your city councils What's on page to find Free family activities.
  • Go to community helpers (police, vet clinic, Doctor office, pharmacy, Fire Brigade) speak to the receptionist and arrange an interview with a helper and learn from them.
  • Visit a retirement home and discover the wealth of informative learning through friendships here.
  • Get to know people in your church. One of the families in our homeschool group wanted to learn to knit so they asked around church till they found someone willing to teach them and they go over for an hour a week lesson.
One of the most important things to remember on your home education journey is that you can not teach everything there is to know.  You need to learn how to learn together.  Answer questions together. Search for information together.  Most importantly you need to enjoy time together.

If you had no money for curriculum what would you do ?  I've enjoyed the challenge of thinking about this question.  It has helped me count my blessings and realise just how privileged we are.

Global Art {Review}

Sir N loves hands on things to do but I'm not very good about finding things for him to do.  So when Global ART became available to review on the crew I jumped at the chance.  This book is published by the award winning publisher of early childhood resources Gryphon House.

I was very impressed with how well it was packaged for posting. When the book arrived it was in perfect condition.  I have really enjoyed using this book and it has made a wonderful addition to our library at home.

About
Title: Global Art
Pages: 190 pages.
Cover: Soft
ISBN:9780876591901
Authors are MaryAnn F. Khol and Jean Potter.
Illustrated by Rebecca Van Slyke.
Publisher: Gryphon House
Item no 18827
Cost: US$16.95

  • I love the fact that each page is dedicated to one craft activity.
  • It is concise and easy to follow.
  • Each chapter is dedicated to a continant
  • Icons on each page indicate the experience level needed, art techniques used and planning and preparation time needed.
  • Indexes in the back: Alphabetical Activity List, Index of Activities by Country or Continent, Index of Terms and Materials, Activity by Preparation Index,  Activity by Experience Level Index, Activity by Art Medium Index
Global ART equips us as parents to use the medium of art to teach our children about the people and wonderfully diverse cultures that come from all over the world today. Each activity is concisely presented with a list of materials needed and the process to follow in order to accomplish the activity.  There is a globe printed on the page with a star indicating the country being learned about. There is a short Did you know? segment featuring some interesting historical/culturally relevant piece of information below the name of the country on each page. I really enjoyed reading these and so did Sir N.

All of the projects I have looked at so far or planned to do with Sir N have been easy to set up and do and most of the time the supplies needed were easily obtainable.  There have not been any activities which have needed super expensive bits and pieces.  Some art projects were achievable with what we had on hand in the art supply cupboard and some did involve planning and the purchase of a couple of items.  For example the project on page 169 (Silver Wind Chimes) needed aluminum foil pie plates of different sizes.

A sample of what we have done

Today Sir N and did a Dream Time painting together. The supplies were all available in the art cupboard - pencils, paint and white paper.

First we read the short cultural note which told us about Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. I then read the short instructions. We divided up the page into quarters and drew four pictures in each quarter.

We took some time and looked up some Dream Time pictures on Google to see which colours are often used. Put paint on the palette and started to paint our dots.  It was a communal effort and I'm quite pleased with the outcome so far. Sir N really loved painting the snake.

I would encourage you to take a look at the great products that are available from Gryphon House.

The Crew have been using this book and The Homegrown Preschooler for the last month.  Be sure to pop on over and read what my crew mates have to say about their experiences.

Christianity Cove {Review}

One of the things I have enjoyed about being on the Schoolhouse Review Crew this year is discovering new vendors.  When the chance to review Christianity Cove came up I was really excited. Christianity Cove is a web based resource created by Mary-Kate Warner who is a Sunday School Director.  Her mission is to provide FREE ideas via her blog and PDF resources in her purchase product range to support Sunday school teachers in their ministry.  Prices vary between $1 - $29. The hardest part was deciding which two products I would like to use with Sir N.  I finally settled on The Ten Commandments and The Lord's Prayer.

The Ten Commandments
  • The Ten Commandments pack comes as a 26.7 MB PDF download upon purchase.
  • Is is a 52 page resource
  • Aimed for use with children in the age bracket of 4-11 years.
  • A comprehensive table of contents.
  • All the needed graphics are supplied and easy to print.
  • A materials list is provided at the beginning of each lesson, project etc
  • Ten Commandments - Currently $27 (Normally $47)
 Contents
  • 3 games
  • 3 craft projects
  • 2 Song options
  • 2 snack ideas
  • 3 worksheets
  • A Science project

I started off by loading the PDF booklet onto my Galaxy Tab and reading through each lesson and craft suggestion.  Once I had a good overview and had decided which crafts we would do I printed those off.  They were all in black and white and all the instructions were easy to follow.  There were also excellent pictures of each craft making it easy to understand what to do with Sir N.  Now it was time to learn the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20).

We started by reading the story of how Moses was given the 10 Commandments by the Lord at Mount Sinai in his children's bible.  Each day we tackled a different project which reinforced his learning.  The games, songs, snacks, crafts and worksheets all focused us in the right direction.  The object lessons were well presented and helped us see that the Ten Commandments are just as relevant today as they were for the Israelite people in the days of Moses.

We really enjoyed using this resource.  It was well presented and required very little work to implement each lesson. For all the lessons and craft pages we had all the items on hand at home and for the food ideas we had most of the items too. All the instructions are comprehensively written and have photographs illustrating the steps or the completed project which made them easy to do as you had a visual clue to aim towards.

All in all Sir N and I enjoyed our adventure with the Ten Commandments.

The Lord's Prayer
  • The The Lord's Prayer pack comes as a 16.1 MB PDF download upon purchase.
  • Is is a 35 page resource
  • Aimed for use with children in the age bracket of 5-14 years.
  • A comprehensive table of contents.
  • All the needed graphics are supplied and easy to print.
  •  Lord's Prayer - Currently $19.99 (Normally $39.99)
Contents
  • 2 Object lessons
  • 2 games
  • 3 crafts
  • Songs
  • 2 Worksheets
  • 2 Snack options
I saved the PDF to my Galaxy Tab and spent time reading and gaining an understanding of the principles being aimed at through each lesson. We started this section of learning by reading the story of how Jesus shared the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13)with His disciples. We had one of the recommended resources for memorising The Lord's Prayer and played this CD regularly as we learnt the words (we are still in the process).

For the projects we are working our way through them.  Sir N loves hands on things to do.  All of the projects are easily completed with items on hand at home.  One of them needed dowel sticks and I simply replaced them with wooden skewers. Their are comprehensive instructions for all the crafts and activities. They are well written out but being a visual learner I found some a little bit hard to follow. This can easily be remedied with a couple of photographs illustrating the point in the same way as they were done for The Ten Commandments craft instructions.

Each of the lessons/crafts/activities illustrated an aspect of prayer in a practical way helping Sir N to understand it better.  Prayer is something that we have always done with him but struggle to get him to partake in.  This series is helping him come to a deeper understanding of prayer and that God hears us even when we don't think that He does and all of this regardless of the outcome that we see.

Connect with Christianity Cove

The thing I enjoyed about teaching through these lesson packs was that they were short and easy to implement.  On average it took 10-15 min a lesson.  It was fun and did not meander to make a point. We have taken slightly longer to work through the lessons than we thought but are enjoying them.

Each pack is specifically designed for Sunday School use but can be very minimally modified for home use to equip you to use all your child's senses to teach the topic at hand.  You do not need to do all the lessons you can pick and choose mix and match at your leisure and according to your need.

At present Christianity Cove have 26 resources in their Sunday School Product Range. The crew were given the opportunity to review 15 of these products. Don't forget to pop on over and read the reviews from the rest of the crew on how they used the following products.

  1. Outstanding Object Lessons
  2. Bible Science Experiments
  3. 100 Simple Service Projects
  4. Daily Dilemmas: 26 True-to-Life Devotions for Kids
  5. Freedom Ride: 12 Lessons of Faith for Today's Teens
  6. "Tween a Rock and a Hard Place" Lesson Blueprints
  7. Bullying & the Bible Lesson Plans
  8. KidMin Power Pack
  9. Bible Memory Games
  10. The Divine Dozen: 12 Parables of Jesus Every Child Should Know

Shipwrecked - Art Instruction DVD {Review}

I first heard about See The Light art classes a couple of years ago when I was looking for an art curriculum to use with Sir N.  I was so excited when we were picked to review Shipwrecked which is part of the Bible Stories category.

I was very impressed with how quickly the DVD arrived in the mail. When it arrived Sir N watched and enjoyed the 15 minute story of the Apostle Paul told through the eyes of a little boy who accompanies his father for the first time on a ship.  It is brought to life with the captivating chalk artwork of Gloria Kohlmann.  We love how the picture within the picture comes to life at the end of the story as they dim the lights and turn on the black light. Sir N has asked to watch this a number of times.

See The Light Philosophy

SEE the artist draw the Bible story.
HEAR the dramatic telling of the story.
DRAW step-by-step lessons related to the Bible.
SHARE the art and the story with others.

What is on the CD
I received one DVD in a plastic cover. The DVD contained the following 260 minutes of content

What We Did
Sir N watched the story of the Apostle Paul a number of times as he enjoyed the dramatisation and especially the end when the secret picture appears.

The next day we gathered our supplies to do Courage! and sat together and learned to do some creative lettering together.  The teacher is Heidi Shorts.  We had the DVD controls handy and paused the DVD several times in order to complete the steps before proceeding to the next step. Originally I thought we would do the class over two days but Sir N was really enjoying the class so we continued to the end.  The highlight was at bed time when we showed Daddy and borrowed his black light torch to see the letters illuminate in the dark.

Our second project was God is My Lighthouse.  This class was taught by Jim Pence using mixed media. It took a while to gather all our resources and Jim does an excellent job of explaining exactly why you need each item and how it will be used in the lesson.  His instructions are clear. The one thing we did differently was we did not halve our paper as I find Sir N struggles a little with working in small detail so we left our page a full size (A4).  There were two things we learned and will do differently when we do this project again and they are:  we will use a better quality masking tape.  The one we used stuck too well to the paper and when we removed it we damaged our picture a little.  The second was that we did not add enough water to the back ground as I was fearful of using that much water.  This was a mistake because the sky paint did not run as easily as he showed us.  Sir N found creating the little ship on the horizon a little difficult and asked me to help him with this part of the project. Once again we really enjoyed bed time when we could switch off the lights and use Paul's black light to reveal the stars and lighthouse beams over the ocean.

The third project we did was Who Will Save Us? taught by Pat Knepley.  Unfortunately I could not source chalk pastels locally or on line so we substituted with oil pastels. (I have subsequently discovered you can purchase them on line from Office Works {Chalk, Soft Pastel Set, Fluoro Oil,} )This worked well and one advantage was that our hands did not get as dirty as they would have with chalk.   Sir N struggled a little with this project and was unhappy with his own effort about a third of the way in and decided to start again.  He was very keen to get to the part of drawing the ship and couldn't wait for bed time to use Daddy's black light to see the hidden scene emerge.

We both really enjoyed doing these lessons and look forward to investing in more bible story DVD's from See the Light.  I really enjoyed doing these lessons too.  Here are the results of my work

Every classes is encouraging on two fronts: one they build your faith and help you to see God at work in the every day and secondly they don't assume you know how to draw.  They equip you to grow in your artistic skills.  The teaching is gently paced and several times the artists encourage you to slow down and pause the video to do the steps they are showing you.  If you are not artistically creative and would like a teacher I would highly recommend you look at purchasing some See The Light classes (available on DVD or on line).

Homeschool in the Woods - Great Empires {Review}

Homeschool in the Woods is my favorite one stop shop for timelines. Recently they have been expanding their product line to include comprehensive Lap-Pak's. This year Sir N and I have embarked upon a chronological history tour and are quite excited to add some hands on activities from the new Great Empires History and Activities Pak from Amy. This pack is available as: download for $18.95/CD for $19.95 +shipping.

The download
I received this pack as a download (84.6 MB).  It downloaded as a zipped file which I extracted by right clicking on the zipped folder and selecting extract. I had created a folder and selected the folder and clicked extract.
Once it extracted there were four icons in the explorer. I double clicked on the Internet explorer icon (4) and the program opened in a new browser window.  No Internet connection is needed to use the download.  You come to a welcome page with some buttons to get started.
  1. Introduction and Usage page
  2. World Map
  3. Time line (time line and figures)
We printed and created the mini timeline and cut and pasted all the timeline figures onto the time line so that we would not loose any as we will be using this time line for the next three years.  As per usual Amy's figures are beautifully illustrated with plenty of detail. As we complete a level we colour in a figure.

What's included in the download
With each empire you will find
  • mapping activities
  • hands on projects
  • cooking ideas (recipe sheets)
  • Internet links
  • additional reading suggestions.

The fourteen empires included
  1. Ancient Egypt—The New Kingdom, Akhenaten & Tutankhamen
  2. Ancient Greece—The Archaic Era, the Golden Age, Alexander the Great
  3. Ancient Rome—the founding of Rome, The Punic Wars, Julius Caesar
  4. Ancient China –The first two dynasties and then jumping forward to communism
  5. Arab/Muslim—Mohamed, Islamic invasion of Europe, the Fall of Constantinople
  6. Mongolian—Mongol culture, Genghis Khan

  14. The United States of America—Revolution, Civil War, Cold War
For Ancient Egypt
We are currently working our way through The Story of the World and when we were introduced to ancient Egypt I took out my pack from Amy.

Each empire has it's own set of links.  I scrolled down to Ancient Egypt. There are eight links.

Printed out the following
  • a recipe page (Ancient Egypt - 5)
  • a mapping page for Egypt (Ancient Egypt - 1)
  • Hieroglyphs page (Ancient Egypt - 3)
I saved the PDF folder to my Galaxy Tablet and used the following pages on my tablet
  • Text page
  • Mapping Ancient Egypt instructions (Ancient Egypt -2 ),
  • a solution key mapping page for Egypt (Ancient Egypt - TK)
  • Make a Cartouche! (Ancient Egypt - 4)and
  • hands on projects page (Activities)
The only thing I found difficult here was that all the buttons simply had Ancient Egypt below them with a number. This made it challenging to find the activity I wanted to do with Sir N. I eventually just opened each page had a look and if it was a student page I printed it if it was an instruction page I took note of it's name (in the tab at the top) and saved the PDF to my tablet. I feel this is the one thing that could be improved by naming what is in each button. For example rather than  Ancient Egypt - 5 have the word Recipes below the button it would make navigation much easier.

Once we had our pages printed and pdf's on the tablet we read the text page and explored Ancient Egypt via books from the local library. Amy provides  a full page of links to explore on the Internet as well as a list of suggested reading.  We borrowed The Cat of Bubastes: A Tale of Ancient Egypt by GA Henty from a friend.  WE really enjoyed listening to this audio book together read by Jim Weiss.

Sir N coloured and added to the map over the week as we learned about different areas. We also cooked one of the recipes provided and enjoyed a taste of Egyptian cuisine.

Over all
This pack is not a full curriculum covering these empires.  It is as it's name says an activity guide.  Amy has put together hands on activities to supplement your studies covering 14 great empires over time. These activities are mainly mapping, suggested books to read, Internet links cooking and a project demonstrating something particular from that era. We have enjoyed using this pack as a supplement to what we are studying and look forward to using it over the next four years to round off our studies.  Amy has put together an excellent resource which is easy to use and does not take up a lot of preparation yet gives Sir N plenty of hands of activity followed by some taste of the era.  We look forward to exploring Ancient Greece and adding in what ever Amy has in store for us.
