Life Skills in Your Homeschool

Wow it's been almost three months since I took up the challenge to blog through the alphabet!  Time flies when you're having fun.  I've had my head in the books.  I've recently decided to pursue one of my other passions that of Aromatherapy and started a course to be certified with the aim of becoming a Clinical Aromatherapist.  I love that God has placed within creation things to heal and support our bodies!  To that end I started a new instagram account and would love for you to pop on over and follow me.  I've called it Nature's Pharmacy Aromatheray

This weeks letter of the alphabet is L and I would like to talk about life skills.  My co-host is sharing a post from memory lane - L is for Legoland.  I can't wait to pop on over and read it as I've always wanted to go to Legoland!

Life Skills

As home schoolers it's so easy to become focused on academics to the detriment of other just as important skill sets for our students.  Without life skills our children are going to flounder no matter how well they are equipped academically.

Some life skills like banking will make navigating life easier however some life skills could literally save your life like learning to swim or first aid.  No one needs to have the proficiency of an olympic swimmer however being able to preserve ones own life and help another really does need to take presidence over academics.

Life skills are fundamental skills for daily survival. It is our job as parents to equip our children to enter the community as well rounded and capable adults.

What Every Child Should Know Along the Way is a must have book for reference regardless of whether you home educate or not.  Gail does a wonderful job of explaining which practical skill sets to focus on and at which age as well as the why behind the skill set.

There are many blog posts and lists online so I'm not going to reinvent the wheel and list them here.  For more information take a look here:

Do you do life skills with your children?

Know Yourself - Stop the Comparison Game

Welcome to week 11 of  Blogging through the Alphabet 2021! This challenge has stretched me a little more than I anticipated it would.  Some weeks it's been difficult to find a topic to talk about.  This week the letter is K.

My co-host Desiree is sharing K is for Kitchen in her Lego ABC. I'm looking forward to seeing what the family will build.  I had no idea that lego made some of the sets that Desiree has showcased over the last three months.

Today I would like to encourage you to Know Yourself and STOP the Comparison Game.

This is far harder than it sounds.  For some reason their is a secret fear that seems to lurk within the homeschool journey. That secret fear is that we will do something wrong and then do a disservice to our children.  This in turn drives us to constantly be watching other homeschooling families and comparing notes with what they are doing.  This in turn results in taking on more and more thing that are unnecessary.

Knowledge is Power. That power is either in your hand or in someone elses. If you don't know what you think or what your goals are then there will be someone out there who is only too happy to lead you a merry dance and convince you to spend your money with them.

Knowing why you are doing something
is the first step in being empowered
to follow through with your choices.

Even if you are a seasoned homeschooler and you don't have your thoughts and focus set, then every single time you see something new or meet a new homeschooler and hear what they are doing you will feel as though you are somehow failing your children or they are missing out which in turn will drive you to choose to add more to an already busy homeschool.  The danger of this is that soon you will be doing a great many things with mediocrity and become overwhelmed and exhausted.

STEP one form the cornerstone of your homeschool by Knowing What You Think & Why.

Unfortunately Covid and Quarantine Schooling has really put a spanner in the works and add a pressure we've never had to experience before.

Remain committed to being true to yourself. - Stop comparing what you are doing to what other homeschooling families are doing.

Remember social media and blogs are not a true reflection of what others are doing nor are they a a list of "I need to do this in order to succeed..." It is better to do a little with excellence than a multitude of things incompletely.

Joy in Your Homeschool Journey

I can't believe it's week 11 of Blogging through the Alphabet 2021! Thank you to everyone who has been joining int the fun each week.  This week we are looking at the letter J and how to find Joy in your Homeschool Journey. My co-host Desiree will be blogging about J is for Jurassic in her alphabet lego series.

I had been homeschooling for around two years and was feeling like I was living in survival mode and begining to loose my joy in homeschooling.  I had taken on far too many expectations from others upon myself and had lost sight of the road.

The year 2000 saw me introduced me to the wonderful Waring Family who were touring New Zealand sharing Beyond Survival with us.  Oh I am so glad I attended this home school seminar.  Diana is an enthusiastic encourager and her family were an inspiration and encouragement to keep schooling through the high school years. Diana's passion and Bills gentle encouragement recharged my batteries.

It was Diana who inspired me to get Beyond Survival in my homeschooling and enjoy the abundance the lifestyle has to offer.  At this conference I learned about learning and teaching styles and the impact this has on our school at home how it causes a lot of frustration both for the teacher and student and it did not have to.

Arm yourself with this treasure from Diana and discover some excellent tools for your homeschool today. This book is available from: The Book Depository and Amazon.

I discovered that Diana has uploaded an encourageing clip on YouTube called Getting Beyond Survival in Homeschooling, here it is for you to enjoy

Instagramers to follow who are Home Educating

Welcome to week ten of Blogging through the Alphabet 2021. This week we are looking at the letter I and my co-host Desiree will be blogging about I is for Iron Man in her alphabet lego series.

Today I would like to share a list of homeschool bloggers to follow on Instagram.  (The original list that I've expanded upon is shared with permission from Erin at Seven Little Australians

Instagram is one of my favourite platforms for it's ease of use and the sense of community is really really encouraging.

Instagram first launched 6 October 2010 and is a phone only app which is available on both Android and Apple products.

You can find me there under the user name @chareenr and @macro_passion. When I first started using instagram I recorded our daily life as a way of tracking what and where we went.  Over the years it's been a multitude of things.  These days I record special moments and the books we are enjoying for high school.

If you are looking for photo's of wildlife or the occasional story from a zoo keeper then pop on over to my husbands instagram @servalpaul.  He loves hand feeding some beautiful little birds and you can see some slow motion feedings under the hashtag #paulswrens

Hashtags are a fabulous way of sifting through the content or discovering content to save or new people to follow.

For homeschoolers try: #charlottemason #homeschoolhighschool  #readaloudrevival #sonlight #homeschool #homeschoolLife #homeschoolingfun #homeschoolmom #homeschoolcommunity #homeschoolblogger #homeschoolingfamily #homeschoolfriends

A great way to discover new accounts is to join a follow loop.  You can also look through the list of whom I'm following here.

American Homeschoolers on Instagram

Canadian Homeschoolers on Instagram

Australian Homeschoolers on Instagram

Australia Somewhere

ACT

Distance Ed

Northern Territory

Queensland

Homeschool Bloggers

Welcome to week nine of Blogging through the Alphabet 2021. This week we are looking at the letter H and my co-host Desiree will be blogging about H is for Harry Potter in her alphabet lego series.

Ove the years I have found a few wonderful friends and bloggers to follow and shared them here on the blog.

A few weeks back I was browsing Seven Little Australian's and Counting and catching up on veteran homeschooling Mum Erin and her amazing family here in Australia I discovered that Erin had a wonderful collection of homeschooling blogs to follow.  I asked her if I could share and she said yes.  The list below has been collated by her and I've added a couple of my own too.

Erin and PC are blessed with eleven children and have been homeschooling and blogging for many years.

IF you love books then following Erin's blog is a must.  She has the most amazing BOOK BLOG

G is for Geography

Welcome back to Blogging through the Alphabet. Today we are looking at the letter G. I must confess this letter stumped me for a few days until I resigned myself to writing about Geography in your homeschool.  My co-host Desiree is sharing G is for Green in her Lego ABC series.

Geography tends to be one of those neglected subjects within homeschooling circles and some curriculum providors.  It does not need to be however as there are some really amazing resources available to us now.  Below I've listed a few resources to get you started.

 Unit Studies on this blog
As we travel the globe on our discovery of Geography I will be adding more geography unit studies to this blog.

Mapping
Books we love
(Libraries are an excellent resource to teach for FREE)

Homeschool giveaways has an excellent resource list of printables too

Curriculum

Expedition Earth

Sir N and I are currently working through Expedition Earth: A Journey through God's World. This curriculum was written by Erica from over at Confessions of a Homeschooler. We have been working our way slowly through this download watching YouTube clips, cooking and extra Notebooking pages. Sir N is enjoying it so much that he calls it our Travel School.

Trail Guide to World Geography

Trail Guide to World Geography  This particular package is my all time favourite.  You can purchase this as a book or an eBook download.  This little big book is chock full.
If you do this book with your children they will have covered geography from A-Z in three years.  You do each section once.  Once in primary school, once in middle school and once in high school. Each time your student does a year they go deeper learn more and practise more.
Each level is a complete 36 week school year course.  The teachers manual comes with everything you need to successfully and comprehensively teach geography without any prior knowledge of the subject.  There are also student work books available for each grade level.

Other Resources

Did you know that the total area of land surface on earth is: 143,804,549 square km?

For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay

Welcome back to Blogging through the Alphabet. Today we are looking at the letter F.  My co-host Desiree is sharing F is for Farm in her Lego ABC series.

For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay (first published in 1984) is the very first book I was given to read about home education.

This book was paradign shifting for me.  Homeschooling was the furtherest thing from my mind.  I had no idea that home education even existed until I met someone who was homeschooling in 1997 in New Zealand when enquiring which preschool to send my children to.

Susan challenged some of the fundamental beliefs I had and the surprising thing is I was not even aware I had them until I read the book. I was introduced to Charlotte Mason in this book and really loved the idea of twaddle free books.

The idea of real books as a basis of education really appealed and still appeals to me today, and thus began my search for a curriculum that contained 'living' books.  Twaddle Free Books  that would touch our lives for years to come, books that were not dead, books that were real and did not leave us treading water going nowhere.

Education a Word Study

In 1883 according to Websters dictionary - noun [Latin educatio.] The bringing up, as of a child, instruction; formation of manners. education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.

138 years later education is defined as -

  • The act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgement and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.
  • the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills for a profession.
  • A degree, level or kind of schooling - Dictionary.com
  • discipline that is concerned with methods of teaching and learning in schools or school-like environments  - Britanica
  • the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university.
  • the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include teaching, training, storytelling, discussion and directed research.- Wikipedia
  • the process of teaching or learning, especially in a school or college or the knoweldge you get from this. - Cabridge Dictionary
  • the action or process of educating or being educated.
  • the knowledge and developemnt resulting from the process of being educated. - Merriam Webster

As home educating parents it is of paramount importance that we understand what an education actually is in order to fully embrace the educational life. As we can see from Websters dictionary it's so much deeper and fuller than simply subjects and classifications.  It encompasses all of life.

For the Children's Sake is a great read for every parent who wants to give their children the best education possible.

Although For the Children's Sake was published nearly forty years ago the ideas within it's pages are as relevant today as they were then.  You will be introduced to one of the greatest education giants of history Charlotte Mason. Susan expounds upon her ideals and shows you the parent what a pivotal role you play with every choice you make along your journey.

It's the type of book one reads to enlarge upon oneself.  It feeds your soul and stretches you to grow in ways you could not even begin to fathom. It encourages and expands the mind and soul. It is an inspirational call to give ourselves and our children the best education possible and extend learning into every single facet of life possible.
