Read-A-Loud in your Homeschool

 Reading out loud is one of the biggest gifts I received as a homeschooler.  I have the most precious memories of cuddling on the couch with my young children working our way together through our latest story. I was thrilled to find a move called Read Aloud Revival by Sarah M.  She also host an amazing Read-Aloud podcast to encourage you.

"Every child ought to know the pleasure of words so well chosen that they awaken sensibility, great emotions, and understanding of truth "- Gladys Hunt

Read-A-Loud in Your Homeschool

Over the years here on the blog I have shared numerous of our favourite read out loud books under

What's my all time Favourite Read A Loud ?

Oh my I have a few that have really impacted me.  I think top of the list would be Carry On Mr Bowditch. I so enjoyed this read aloud from Sonlight that I took out our encyclopedia to research him and all it had was a few lines with a reference to this book as the definitive work on the man.

Help where do I start finding great books to read out loud to my family?

A side note on Learning to read:

While reading out loud to our children is important as it imparts so many linguistic skills to our children.  One of the most often asked questions is how to teach children to read or why is my child still not able to read?! There are multiple factors that influence your children's ability to learn to read. I wrote a mini five part series on this a few years ago.

The series is not about the different methods used to teach reading but rather about some of the factors that influence a students ability to learn to read.

What are some of YOUR favourite Read-A-Louds ?

Mike Mulligan and More A Virginai Lee Burton Treasury {5 Days of Picture Books}

Before I started on my home school journey I visited many homeschooling families to see what they were using.  After many months I settled on using Sonlight Curriculum to begin our journey.  Over the years I have used many different curriculum options however we've always seemed to migrate back to my first option.  When Nathaniel was little we used the pre-school package from Sonlight and in this package we received Mike Mulligan and More A Virginai Lee Burton Treasury.

This is one of the most beautiful picture book compendiums I own. I loved reading these stories over and over and over again. The pictures are gorgeous and the characters are lovely. Each charater brings honour to living a simple life with integrity. Each hero exhibits determination and a graceful adaptation to the changes life brings their way.   Each story in this treasury is complete and unabridged.

Books in the Treasury

The Little House was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1943.
From Book Depository: "The Little House, a poignant story of a cute country cottage that becomes engulfed by the city that grows up around it. The house has an expressive face of windows and doors, and even the feelings of a person, so she's sad when she's surrounded by the dirty, noisy city's hustle and bustle: "She missed the field of daisies / and the apple trees dancing in the moonlight." Fortunately, there's a happy ending, as the house is taken back to the country where she belongs."

 Maybelle the Cable Car is based on actual historical events in San Francisco.  It chronicals the city's efforts to keep the cable cars running.  The story shows how the voice fo the people can be heard in the true spirit of democracy to achieve good things.

Katy and the Big Snow illustrates how important even the smallest jobs really are.
From Book Depository: "Katy, a brave and untiring tractor, who pushes a bulldozer in the summer and a snowplow in the winter, makes it possible for the townspeople to do their jobs. In this enduring winter favorite from the Caldecott Medal winner Burton, Katy the snowplow finally gets her chance to shine when a blizzard blankets the city and everyone is relying on Katy to help dig out. Children love sharing Katy's shining moment of glory and will inevitably admire her "chug, chug, chug" endurance."

 Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
From Amazon: "Mike and his trusty steam shovel, Mary Anne, dig deep canals for boats to travel through, cut mountain passes for trains, and hollow out cellars for city skyscrapers -- the very symbol of industrial America. But with progress come new machines, and soon the inseparable duo are out of work. Mike believes that Mary Anne can dig as much in a day as one hundred men can dig in a week, and the two have one last chance to prove it and save Mary Anne from the scrap heap. What happens next in the small town of Popperville is a testament to their friendship, and to old-fashioned hard work and ingenuity."

Picture Books to Read out Loud {5 Days of Picture Books}

A few weeks back Sonlight asked:  Name a picture book that you never tire of reading aloud.  Since many of us are now in isolation and Quarantine-schooling I thought I'd share some of the suggestions with you.

{Please note that the links below to Book Depository are affiliate links.  You will not pay more for the books however I will receive a commision should you choose to purchase a book from them}

Have you read any of these?  We have read and enjoyed a few of them over the years and I'm certainly looking forward to reading them to my grand children one day.

What are your favourite read aloud picture books?

Books About Homeschooling {Not Back to School Blog Hop 2019}

Welcome to day two of the Not Back to School Homeschool Review Crew Blog Hop.  Today on the Crew blog Stephanie is sharing 4 Tips for Your New (Home)School Year. Yesterday we talked about ART in Your Homeschool and today I would like to share about two new books I've been reading. These two books have been encouraging and equipping me on my home education journey and have deeply impacted my life this year.

I was gifted this amazing book by a wonderful homeschool Mom whom I met a few years ago and has become an encouraging friend. It was a book on my to read list and recently I added it to my Audible play list in which Sarah reads the book to her audience.

As a veteran homeschooling Mom I am ever so grateful for this beautiful encouraging book.  I have been feeling exhausted and on the edge of burn out for a while now and this book has spoken to my weary home school Mom heart.  Sarah has encouraged me in a deep abiding way.  Her conversational tone is a balm to all home educating Mom's the world over. I have learnt so much from Sarah about living and teaching from a state of rest and what it truly means to do so.

Publishers Summary - "Those who have made the decision to homeschool their children have done so out of great love for them and a desire to provide them an excellent education in the context of a warm, enriching home. Yet so many parents (mainly mothers) who have taken up this challenge find the enterprise often full of stress, worry, and anxiety. In this practical, faith-based, and inspirational book, Sarah Mackenzie addresses these questions directly, appealing to her own study of restful learning and her struggle to bring restful learning to her (six) children."

I have had a few homeschooling learning myths dispelled and I have been empowered with tools to help myself and my students.  This book has the potential to change everyone who reads it!

Publishers Summary: "Our thought lives have incredible power over our mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. In fact, our thoughts can either limit us to what we believe we can do or release us to experience abilities well beyond our expectations. When we choose a mindset that extends our abilities rather than placing limits on ourselves, we will experience greater intellectual satisfaction, emotional control, and physical health. The only question is . . . how? Backed by up-to-date scientific research and biblical insight, Dr. Caroline Leaf empowers readers to take control of their thoughts in order to take control of their lives. In this practical book, readers will learn to use

 - The 5-step Switch on Your Brain Learning Program, to build memory and learn effectively
- The Gift Profile, to discover the unique way they process information
- The Mindfulness Guide, to optimise their thought life and find their inner resilience

 Dr. Leaf shows readers how to combine these powerful tools in order to improve memory, learning, cognitive and intellectual performance, work performance, physical performance, relationships, emotional health, and most importantly a meaningful life well lived.

Each of us has significant psychological resources at our fingertips that we can use in order to improve our overall well-being. Dr. Leaf shows us how to harness those resources to unlock our hidden potential."

 In the past I have shared and still recommend

I would love to hear which books you recommend for Homeschool Mom's to read.

10 Books for Middle Grade Summer Reading

10 Books for Middle Grade Summer Reading
This week I would like to share 10 books we have enjoyed reading for the middle grade years.  Each of these books we have enjoyed so much that we have purchased them to read over again.  Click on any of the titles below for more information found on this blog.

When I first started home educating I really struggled to find excellent twaddle free literature for my children to enjoy.  Over the years I have collected  some wonderful book resource lists and have shared them here: Book List Resources.

These books are not from one particular genre but rather a wide variety.  For more information on the different types of genre available in the book world read these posts: Genre and Sub Genre.

As much as it's delightful seeing your children enjoy a particular series a wise homeschool Mom once encouraged me to keep the variety coming so as not to stall my children's growth.  Reading only one type of book becomes a little like only eating one particular food source and creates an unhealthy environment in the mind.

When choosing books for your students to enjoy be sure to choose books of all levels.  It's always good to allow the brain to rest after wading through a difficult book by reading something light and easy.  This allows the brain to regroup and prepare for the next book.

Our 10 Favourite Caldecott Medal Books

This months theme for the Poppins Book Nook is Caldecott Medal Books.

If you had asked me twenty years ago what a Caldecott book was I would not have had any idea.  Thanks to homeschooling I was introduced to the concept of twaddle free literature and the importance of beautiful pictures in the lives of my children.

Before I began home educating I had no idea of the importance or impact of any of these things and thanks to Sonlight I now have a good insight into both. Our first three years of homeschooling were with Sonlight and a good many of the books I received in those cores contained Caldecott Medal books which served as good training to spot a beautifully illustrated book at the library and for that I'm really grateful to the people at Sonlight who choose the books for the cores.

Without further ado these are a few of our favourite things ...
